Introduction

Many unresolved UAP images become less mysterious when investigators examine not the object itself, but the camera system that recorded it. A photograph or infrared video can be a genuine record of a real observation while still presenting a distorted version of reality. Glare, internal reflections, sensor noise, image compression, tracking errors and display-processing artefacts can all create apparent shapes, speeds or behaviours that were never present in the scene. NASA’s independent UAP study highlighted that poor sensor calibration and missing metadata are major obstacles to interpretation, noting that some apparent UAP have later proved to be sensor artefacts once the underlying technical data were examined. Artifacts illustration 1 This distinction is especially important in discussions surrounding UFO evidence and claims associated with figures such as Gary McKinnon. Whether an image comes from a civilian camera, a military infrared system or an alleged government archive, the evidential value depends heavily on understanding how the image was produced. Before asking what a UAP image shows, investigators must first ask what the sensor might have added.

The Camera Can Add the Mystery

Modern imaging systems do not simply record reality. They transform incoming light into electronic signals, apply processing algorithms, compress the data and display the result on a screen. Every stage can introduce misleading features.

A distant bright object can bloom across neighbouring pixels, creating the appearance of a larger structured craft. Internal reflections between optical elements can generate duplicate images or apparent companions. Digital sharpening can exaggerate edges and make simple objects appear geometric. Infrared systems can produce contrast effects that look like solid objects even when the underlying signal is weak. NASA’s UAP study emphasised that reliable interpretation requires knowledge of sensor characteristics, calibration and acquisition conditions rather than relying solely on the visual appearance of an image. [NASA Science+2NASA]science.nasa.govNASA ScienceIndependent Study Team ReportAt present, analysis of UAP data is hampered by poor sensor calibration, the lack of multiple me…

The result is a recurring investigative problem: observers may honestly report a strange shape or unusual motion, while the camera has unintentionally manufactured part of what makes the object appear extraordinary.

Glare, Compression and False Shapes

Bright Objects Rarely Stay Simple

One of the most common sources of confusion is glare. When a bright light source overwhelms part of the sensor, the resulting image can develop spikes, halos, blobs or asymmetric structures that have little relationship to the physical object.

This effect becomes more pronounced when cameras are heavily zoomed. A distant aircraft, satellite reflection or bright planet can take on apparently exotic shapes because the recorded image is dominated by optical imperfections rather than the target itself.

Scientific imaging systems routinely encounter similar problems. Studies of satellite and Earth-observation sensors have documented stray-light artefacts in which light originating outside the intended field of view creates ghost signals and false structures on detectors. These artefacts can alter apparent shapes and brightness patterns if not corrected. Compression Can Invent Detail

Many UAP videos circulate as compressed clips uploaded repeatedly to social media platforms. Compression algorithms save storage space by simplifying image information, particularly in low-contrast regions.

The side effects can include:

  • Block-like structures that resemble craft surfaces.
  • Artificial edges around moving objects.
  • Flickering shapes that appear to change form.
  • Distorted trails behind bright targets.
  • Apparent splitting or merging of objects.

Investigators therefore prefer original recordings whenever possible. A heavily compressed copy may contain visual features that did not exist in the source footage.

Display Processing Can Mislead

Military and aviation sensors often present processed imagery rather than raw detector output. Contrast enhancement, stabilisation, target tracking and display overlays can create visual impressions that differ from the physical scene.

The image seen by an operator is therefore not always a direct representation of what the sensor detected. Without documentation of the processing chain, investigators risk interpreting software behaviour as object behaviour.

The Puerto Rico Case and Apparent Splitting

One of the most debated examples of sensor interpretation concerns the 2013 Aguadilla, Puerto Rico infrared video recorded by a U.S. Customs and Border Protection aircraft.

The footage appeared to show an object travelling rapidly, moving near water and eventually splitting into two separate objects. For years, the apparent division of the object was cited as evidence of unusual behaviour. Independent researchers and later government investigators analysed the same footage and reached sharply different conclusions regarding what the object represented. The key lesson for sensor-artifact analysis is that the dramatic “splitting” event depended heavily on how the infrared imagery was interpreted. Frame-by-frame examination raised questions about whether the effect reflected a physical division of a single object, the changing visibility of multiple objects, sensor perspective effects, or image-processing limitations. The visual impression alone did not resolve the issue. In 2025, the Pentagon’s All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO) published a formal resolution of the case. Using reconstruction methods, flight-path analysis and environmental data, AARO concluded with moderate confidence that the footage showed a pair of sky lanterns drifting with the wind. According to the assessment, the objects did not exhibit transmedium movement or anomalous performance despite initial perceptions created by the infrared video. Regardless of whether every investigator accepts that conclusion, the Puerto Rico case demonstrates a broader point: apparent extraordinary behaviour can emerge from the interaction of sensor geometry, image processing and observer expectations. The visual impression alone was insufficient to determine what occurred.

Why Metadata Matters Before Interpretation

The most important information about a UAP image is often invisible to viewers.

Metadata can include:

  • Sensor model and configuration.
  • Exposure settings.
  • Zoom level.
  • Time and location.
  • Aircraft position and motion.
  • Tracking-system status.
  • Compression history.
  • Detector noise characteristics.

Without these details, investigators cannot reliably reconstruct what the camera was seeing. NASA’s UAP study repeatedly identified missing metadata as one of the principal reasons that many reports remain difficult to analyse scientifically. The report noted that several apparent UAP have ultimately been identified as sensor artefacts once calibration information and metadata were examined. [NASA Science+2Wikisource]science.nasa.govNASA ScienceIndependent Study Team ReportAt present, analysis of UAP data is hampered by poor sensor calibration, the lack of multiple me…

This is why an image that appears impressive on social media may be far less informative than a seemingly ordinary image accompanied by complete technical records.

What Sensor Artefacts Mean for UFO Evidence

Sensor artefacts do not prove that every unresolved UAP image has an ordinary explanation. Some cases remain unidentified because the available information is incomplete. However, the repeated appearance of glare effects, compression distortions, tracking artefacts and display-processing anomalies has taught investigators an important lesson: visual appearance is not enough.

NASA, AARO and other scientific efforts increasingly emphasise calibrated sensors, multiple independent measurements and complete metadata because these tools help separate genuine observations from artefacts introduced by the recording system itself. [arXiv+3NASA Science+3NASA]science.nasa.govNASA ScienceIndependent Study Team ReportAt present, analysis of UAP data is hampered by poor sensor calibration, the lack of multiple me…

For anyone evaluating UFO imagery—whether a smartphone photograph, an infrared military recording or a claimed archival image—the first question is not whether the object looks extraordinary. It is whether the camera might have added part of the mystery.
