Introduction
One of the most persistent misunderstandings in modern UFO debates is the belief that an unresolved case is automatically evidence of alien technology. The All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO) has repeatedly drawn a different conclusion. Its investigations acknowledge that some reports remain unidentified, but it argues that unresolved status usually reflects limits in the available evidence rather than proof of extraterrestrial craft. That distinction matters when evaluating broader claims about hidden UFO programmes, secret space fleets, or allegations such as those associated with Gary McKinnon. A mystery is not the same thing as a solution. According to both AARO and NASA, many UAP cases remain open because investigators lack the information needed to determine what was observed, not because investigators have confirmed something beyond known science. What AARO Means by Unresolved
In ordinary language, “unresolved” often sounds dramatic. In an investigative context, it has a much narrower meaning: analysts cannot confidently identify an object or event using the available evidence.
AARO’s public case releases illustrate this distinction. Several officially published cases are labelled unresolved not because they demonstrate extraordinary performance, but because the office lacks enough information to make a reliable determination. In one Europe-based case from 2024, AARO stated that a short mobile-phone video was insufficient to render a determination. In another Middle East case, analysts noted the absence of corroborating telemetry and multi-sensor data, preventing a conclusive evaluation. This approach is consistent with AARO’s broader historical review. The office found that earlier UFO investigations often left a minority of reports unresolved because records were incomplete, witnesses were unavailable, sensor data were limited, or critical contextual information had been lost. AARO’s conclusion was not that unexplained cases proved alien visitation; rather, many could not be solved because the evidence itself was inadequate. The distinction becomes even clearer when AARO discusses cases that appear to involve real physical objects. The office has publicly stated that some footage shows a physical object, yet simultaneously notes that the available data are insufficient to determine its nature, origin, or performance characteristics. Seeing an object and identifying an object are two different analytical steps. Why Missing Speed, Size and Altitude Matter
A recurring theme in official UAP reviews is the importance of three basic measurements: speed, size and altitude.
Without those values, many seemingly extraordinary observations become impossible to interpret accurately. A bright point of light could be a distant aircraft, a nearby drone, a balloon, a satellite, a sensor artefact or something else entirely. To distinguish among those possibilities, investigators need distance and motion data. If distance is unknown, apparent speed can be wildly misleading.
Consider a common analytical problem. An object that appears to streak across a camera frame may seem to be moving at tremendous velocity. Yet if investigators cannot establish how far away the object was, they cannot calculate its actual speed. A nearby insect crossing a sensor can appear faster than a distant aircraft. Likewise, an object that appears enormous may simply be closer than assumed.
AARO’s historical review specifically highlighted the long-standing difficulty created by missing information about altitude, size and velocity. Even modern sensors do not automatically provide all of those measurements, particularly when only a brief video clip survives while the underlying telemetry is unavailable. NASA reached a similar conclusion. Its independent UAP study repeatedly emphasised that limited, poorly calibrated or incomplete data make scientific interpretation difficult. The agency concluded that current evidence does not support an extraterrestrial explanation and that better-quality observations are required before stronger conclusions can be drawn. [NASA Science+2NASA Science]science.nasa.govNASA ScienceIndependent Study Team ReportAlthough civilian airspace data has been used by AARO to assist with the analysis of isolated UA…
The practical result is that many unresolved cases are not “too strange to explain”. They are often cases where investigators cannot reliably calculate the basic properties needed to test competing explanations.
How the Alien Shortcut Distorts Weak Records
The “alien shortcut” is the logical jump from “we do not know what this is” to “therefore it is extraterrestrial”.
This reasoning appears frequently in popular UFO discussions because unresolved cases create a vacuum that invites speculation. Yet from an evidential perspective, the jump bypasses several necessary steps. Before an extraterrestrial explanation can become persuasive, investigators would first need evidence ruling out more ordinary possibilities, establish reliable measurements, confirm the object’s behaviour and demonstrate that known technologies cannot account for the observation.
An unresolved case usually lacks precisely that information.
AARO’s public position reflects this point. The office has reported no verified evidence that unresolved UAP cases represent extraterrestrial technology, extraterrestrial activity, or hidden reverse-engineering programmes. Instead, it argues that many unresolved reports remain unresolved because available information is insufficient for definitive analysis. [U.S. Department of War+2Axios]media.defense.govDOPSR 2024 0263 AARO HISTORICAL RECORD REPORT VOLUME 1 2024Department of WarAARO Historical Record Report Volume 18 Mar 2024 — SECTION I: Introduction. NASA’s study team expressed the same caution in scientific terms. The absence of a conventional explanation does not automatically support an extraordinary one. Limited data can support multiple competing hypotheses simultaneously, which means uncertainty should remain uncertainty until stronger evidence appears. [NASA Science+2NASA Science]science.nasa.govNASA ScienceIndependent Study Team ReportAlthough civilian airspace data has been used by AARO to assist with the analysis of isolated UA…
This is particularly relevant when unresolved UAP reports are used to support claims about secret alien fleets, recovered spacecraft, or hidden government programmes. The existence of unresolved cases demonstrates that some observations have not yet been explained. It does not, by itself, provide positive evidence for any specific explanation.
Why This Matters When Comparing Official Reviews and Hacker Claims
Within debates surrounding figures such as Gary McKinnon, unresolved UAP reports are sometimes treated as indirect support for broader claims about concealed extraterrestrial technology. The logic usually runs as follows: if some UAP cases remain unexplained, then secret alien programmes become more plausible.
Official reviews do not support that inference. AARO’s position is that unresolved reports and alien conclusions are separate questions. A case can remain unidentified while providing no evidence whatsoever for extraterrestrial origin. Likewise, an investigative gap does not become proof of a hidden programme merely because the gap exists. The key lesson from the unresolved-case record is therefore methodological rather than sensational. Unknown is a category of evidence, not a category of explanation. AARO’s unresolved files show that uncertainty survives even in modern investigations. They do not show that investigators have discovered alien technology and concealed the result. Instead, they illustrate a more mundane but important reality: sometimes the available record is simply too weak to support a confident conclusion.
